TYPES OF VOLTAGE REDUCERS

Voltage Reducer: An electronic voltage regulator that delivers the proper voltage regardless of the demand on the unit up to the specified rating of the unit. While its inner workings are complex, it is simple to install. One wire to source, one wire to ground, and then third wire supplies the 6.2 volts to any or all of your lower voltage accessories. The current is filtered going in and going out to assure no interference with your radio reception.

Resistors: There are many types, sizes, and descriptions of resistors. Resistors are often sold as one size fits all for reducing voltage from 12 V. to 6 V. on automobiles. In fact, the opposite is true. The amount of voltage drop through a resistor is dependent on the amount of current through the resistor. These usually sell for around $5 to $25 and may be a waste of your money. Don’t be fooled. Getting the right size and number of resistors to give you the proper voltage can be quite complicated. Unless you have a pretty good understanding of the ohms law this is not the best way to go. And if you do have this understanding, you will probably choose a voltage regulator for simplicity.

Cheap electronic voltage reducers are usually 1-3 amps, no filters, and difficult to install. One unit is required for each gauge.

Transformers: Alternating current uses a simple device called a transformer. These don’t work with direct current. Don’t even think about it.

This unit was bench tested in our shop, powering an OEM, 1955 Ford AM radio, that draws 4.2 amps at 6.2 volts. With a measured input of 12.3 volts, and a measured current of 3.0 amps, this unit held 6.2 volts dc +/- .1 volt with a calibrated 3.0 amp load.  input voltage was lowered to 9.2 vdc and it maintained an output voltage of 6.0 volts, and the radio still played.  The input voltage was then slowly raised to a max of 23.8 volts and the output voltage maintained steady at 6.2 volts at 4.2 amps.

The case is isolated from either polarity and can be mounted in the vehicle without worry.  This unit cannot be used to reverse ground polarity. e.g. negative ground input to positive ground output or vice versa. The 6 volt radio should be connected  the same polarity as the vehicle.
